Helping Your Child Learn to Read

There are lots of fun ways to help your child to learn to love books. Reading books aloud to your child is one of the best ways to introduce them to the world of reading. Each child is different and will learn to read at their own pace. You can start by going to the local library and have your child pick out books.

When reading to your child it’s important to remember a few things:

  • Make sure to use your finger to point to the words as you are reading

  • Use funny voices and expressions while reading

  • Make sure to point out pictures and colors in the story and ask your child questions

  • What do you think is going to happen next?

  • What do you think the character is feeling?

  • If your child has a question about the story, stop and take your time to answer their question.

  • Invite other siblings and family members to read along and interact along with the story.

Have books available in different places such as your living room, bedroom, and the car so your child has easy access to the books.

Reading with your child is not only a learning opportunity but also a bonding opportunity. You and your child will share great memories bonding emotionally while snuggled up in your favorite chair reading and giggling together. You can make it part of their bedtime ritual.

Books aren’t the only thing they can read. Grocery lists, magazines, and newspapers are filled with words, colors, and shapes. Point out words to them and see if they recognize them. Any example of print at home sends a message that reading and writing are an important, fun part of life.

Remember the goal of your shared reading time is to foster a love of reading, while helping your child appreciate and understand what is reading.
